Karratha, Western Australia –  2024

This new facility is one of a number of projects being undertaken throughout the state to act as a ‘halfway’ house for mental health patients either ‘stepping down’ from hospital care or ‘stepping up’ from outside of any formal care.

The building consists of six accommodation units, a central administration building, a communal living/cooking facility and an activity centre.  The aim is to create a facility that is ‘de-institutionalised’ and nurturing to facilitate a restorative environment.

The requirements are for a robust and low maintenance series of buildings, designed for the specific climate of the region but also with the issues associated with mental health patients at the forefront.

The building is required to blend into the largely residential surroundings.  The clients are expected to be largely indigenous, consequently creating the need to understand the cultural requirements and sensitivities of the clientele.
