Youth Involvement Centre
This project called for substantial urban planning of the existing Youth Centre precinct, before redeveloping the site for growth and expansion of its educational services.
Community
South Headland, Western Australia – 2024
The award-winning Youth Involvement Council (YIC) – a not-for-profit and the primary youth service in South Hedland – creates improved education and life pathways for young indigenous people.
YIC’s programs focus on the health and nutrition of localunderprivileged, at risk or homeless young people, aged 10 to 25 who need general support.
From the outset, Whitehaus engaged in intense discussions with the community, our client and stakeholders, and we closely observed the day-to-day operations of the facility to develop the design solution.
By gaining an in-depth understanding of cultural and social requirements, we were able to establish a design brief to suit the needs of YIC staff and community.
We also provided a long-term life cycle analysis of the precinct and its buildings, including maintenance projections, to ensure that YIC would remain cost-effective to operate in future.
Our design solution for the precinct comprises four separate buildings:
– Reception, exhibition space, admin building & teaching kitchen
– Double-height, multi-purpose recreation/function building
– Outdoor amphitheatre and crèche,
– Workshop, storage and classroom facilities.
